Editorial policy

Short, and meant literally.

1. Nobody pays to be listed

There is no paid inclusion, no sponsored listing, no featured tier and no affiliate arrangement with any farm on this site. A business cannot buy its way onto Stackyard, cannot buy a better position, and cannot buy the removal of a competitor.

If advertising is ever added, it will be clearly labelled, it will be sold through a network rather than to the farms we list, and this page will be updated before it goes live.

2. Ordering is mechanical

Listings on area pages are ordered by completeness score first, then hygiene rating, then alphabetically. That is the whole algorithm. It is implemented in one function and nobody can lean on it.

3. Every fact is sourced and dated

Each listing shows where its information came from, the licence it sits under, the date we retrieved it, and its completeness score out of 5. The sources are listed in full. If we cannot source a fact, it does not go on the page.

4. We say when we do not know

Where we have found and verified a farm's own website, its listing shows the opening hours and offerings published there, credited to that site and dated. Where we have not, the listing says plainly that we do not know and tells you to check with the farm. We never split the difference by guessing. Where a location is derived from a partial postcode, the listing is badged Approximate location.

We hold no prices, no stock levels and no opinion on the quality of what is sold anywhere on this site.

4a. Links to farms' own websites are verified, not guessed

Website addresses are not supplied to us — they are found. A domain that merely resembles a farm's name proves nothing: in testing, four in five plausible-looking domains that responded turned out to belong to somebody else, including an advertising broker, a design studio and a run of parked domains for sale. So a link only appears once the site itself corroborates the match, normally by carrying the farm's own postcode. The rules are published in full.

4b. We do not republish what farms wrote

Listings carry facts drawn from a farm's website — that it opens on Saturdays, that it has a butchery counter — and a link straight to the source. They do not carry that farm's own words, and nothing here is a summary written to save you the trip to their site. The point is to send people to these businesses, not to stand between them and their customers.

5. No invented experience

Jack farms, and writes here about how farm businesses work from that experience. He has not visited the 3,024 businesses listed, and no page on this site claims a visit, a tasting, a meal or a conversation that did not happen. If first-hand write-ups are added later they will be clearly marked as such, dated, and signed.

6. No reviews

There are no customer reviews on this site — not ours, not scraped from anyone else's. Food hygiene ratings shown on listings are regulatory inspection results from the local council, not opinions, and they are never presented as star ratings or marked up as review data.

7. Thin pages stay out of search

Area pages with fewer than 3 listings, and listing pages scoring under 3/5 for completeness, carry a noindex tag. They remain reachable and useful on the site; they are simply not offered up as search results until they earn it.

8. Corrections are free and fast

Anyone can ask for a correction. Business owners can ask for removal, for any reason or none, and we will not ask them to justify it or offer them a paid alternative. The process is here.

9. Who is responsible

Jack — founder and editor — is responsible for everything published here, including the mistakes. More about him.
